A walled garden in Richmond
Domestic · rebuild
York stone, espaliered fruit and a long mixed border — a Victorian walled garden brought back into daily use.
The brief
The garden had been lawned over in the 1990s. The walls were sound; the spirit was gone. We were asked to make a garden that could be lived in, not merely looked at.
The approach
We recovered the original axial path, laid new York stone in a quiet broken pattern, and planted a south border for a nine-month season. Espaliered pear and apple take the west wall. A simple water rill holds the centre.
The outcome
A garden that earns its keep from March to November, with a winter structure of yew, stone and fruit wood.
