ASHRIDGE
English garden with clipped structure and perennial colour

Primrose Hill, London · 2025

A courtyard in Primrose Hill

Domestic · courtyard

Limestone, clipped yew and a single water bowl — a six-metre square made to feel twice its size.

The brief

A listed terrace with no soil to speak of, and a client who cooks outside from April to October. The brief was shade, dining, and something green to look at from the kitchen.

The approach

We built up on a lightweight deck, laid pale limestone, and planted in deep troughs. One yew cube, one multi-stem amelanchier, a climbing hydrangea on the rear wall. Lighting is low and warm.

The outcome

An outdoor room used most evenings in season. Maintenance is a monthly Garden Care Club visit.
